Alexander M. de Bree, son of John and Mary W. de Bree, served in the United States Navy, 1841-1860. He was dismissed in 1861 for failure to take an oath of allegiance to the United States, and eventually served in the Confederate Navy. His father also served in the U.S. Navy, and was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia at the time these letters were written.
